WHAT WILL YOU DO

The Specialist, Safety Programs will support development and/or maintenance of the Authority’s safety programs (AVOP, Investigations, Risk Assessments, OH&S, etc). A focus on documentation standards and regulatory compliance with all manuals, policies, procedures, and training material related to the Authority’s safety programs. This position will also develop and deliver training directly to the safety team, as required, to support development and/or maintenance of the Authority’s safety programs.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Enhance and maintain safety programs that align with the organization"s goals and objectives.
  • Identifying potential hazards and developing procedures to mitigate risks
  • Establishing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant regulations. This involves reviewing and analyzing relevant regulations and creating policies and procedures to address any identified risks.
  • Focus on reviewing and enhancing the Safety Program documentation for Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), Contractor Safety and Aviation Safety (SMS and Airside Safety).
  • Development of Authority documents for delivering written and practical testing.
  • Developing training materials, delivering training sessions, and creating educational materials to communicate safety policies to the organization and procedures for the safety team.
  • Gather information and analyze processes and procedures to determine the logical and sequential flow of documentation.
  • Seek out pertinent information with stakeholders using appropriate information-gathering techniques.
  • Document processes, policies, and procedures by writing, editing and publishing comprehensive standard operating procedures, policy documents and other supporting documentation that is clear, concise, grammatically correct and easy to understand.
  • Update documentation to keep information current; ensure quality and accuracy while meeting internal deadlines.
  • Organize material and complete writing assignments according to deadlines and set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, and terminology.
  • Review existing operating manuals and recommend revisions to represent the information more clearly and accurately to our stakeholders.
  • Create documentation that meets regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders internal and external to the organization, including management, employees, and safety committees, to ensure that safety programs are effective and align with the organization"s goals and objectives.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING

  • Post-secondary education in safety, environmental, or similar is preferred, but professional equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 3+ years related industry experience (e.g. OSH, construction, and/or aviation SMS.)
  • CRSP Canadian Registered Safety Professional or working toward designation or similar designation (e.g., CSP) preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act (sections applicable to ‘owners’ responsibilities, sections required for advising Authority staff who manage employees under the Alberta OH&S Act)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Canada Labour Code Part Two and Criminal Code of Canada (as related to workplace health and safety)
  • Subject matter expert on remediation and advisory role on other hazardous materials.
  • Working knowledge of construction related safety practices and guidelines, building codes and guidelines related to hazardous building materials (Asbestos and Mould management).
  • Subject matter expert on environmental regulations that pertain to the storage, use and emergency response of hazardous materials in the workplace (both Authority and service contracted workspaces)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an eye for detail; must have exceptional technical writing skills including correct use of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling. Effective documentation must be clear and concise and written with the audience in mind. Documents must follow a specific format and may be read by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Intermediate to advanced technical computer skills in Microsoft Office products with a firm understanding of design, layout and graphics through Word.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License or equivalent, subject to a clean driver’s abstract
